Volkswagen presented the first-generation Golf as a modern front-wheel-drive, long-range replacement for the Volkswagen Beetle. Later Golf variations included the Golf GTI "hot hatch" (introduced in June, 1976), a Diesel-powered version (from September, 1976), the Jetta notchback saloon version (from October, 1979), the Golf Cabriolet (from January, 1980) and a Golf-based pickup, the Volkswagen Caddy.

The Golf Mk1 was sold as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico.

Even if the car is a regular little compact - hatchback car, there's nothing really like it. Hitler wanted the design project for the Beetle started and gave the job to Ferdinand Porshe, later to become very well known for the "Porsche" cars that bore his name. Hitler specified some criteria, including a top speed of 62 mph (100 kmh), at least 42 miles to the gallon fuel consumption, able to transport at least 2 adults and 3 children and to be able to sell for less than what was at the time the equivalent of 86 pounds (UK currency).

Thus began the history of the VW Beetle, arguably the most famous car in history.

The big question was the engine to be used and the placement of the engine, and in 1935 an Austrial engineer came up with a design for a flat four engine, Porshe having previously decided that the engine should be rear mounted. This engine was an air cooled engine, and was cheap to build, and this engine powered hundreds of thousands of beetles for the next 40 years.

The original idea for the VW Beetle, or what is also known as the VW Bug, came from Adolf Hitler. It is said that he had the idea of a "peoples car" in 1924 whilst he way in prison. In 1933 the Nazi party came to power and Hitler raised the issue of building special roads for the peoples car, and in 1933 the government began a program of construction of "autobahns" for German drivers. Enter the tuning firm's new "MR6R" power kit, which adds a reprogrammed ECU, custom downpipe, intercooler and a sports exhaust system to boost the TSI's output from 270HP and 350Nm to 330HP and 470Nm. The German company did not release acceleration numbers, but we'll assume that with this kit, the Golf R will improve the stock model's 5.7 second time for the 100km/h mark.

It is 2010 (model year) now, and a new kid is on the block, the MkVI GTI, an update of the MkV. Surely it too carries the torch forward for the Volkswagen GTI family.

2012 The VW Golf

Depending on optional equipment, the original price of the MkV GTI varied from $22,000-$27,000. In all specifications, this yielded a great value for the money. For under $30,000 (sometimes well under) one could get a very sporty car which comfortably seats 4 adults, carries a load of groceries, gets 30 miles to the gallon, and puts a smile on your face!

At the end of July, I was part of the last group of journalists to preview and test-drive the all-new VW Jetta. We were in the San Francisco area, taking a lengthy test-drive in Northern California.

The VW Jetta media event was a little different than usual since most of the journalists were foreign. There were groups from Singapore, Mexico, Canada, India, China, and elsewhere. Obviously, Volkswagen is reaching out. However, the new Jetta design is clearly aimed at the North American market.
